A period, semi-detached home located on a leafy street in Sale, South Manchester.

The contemporary, rear extension aimed to simplify the existing, disjointed layout of the ground floor, providing a new kitchen and family space. The new space replaced an old kitchen extension and conservatory, which linked the kitchen to the dining room.

The clients wanted to express a bold new language to the extension to signify the contemporary change to the house. Black, charred timber cladding was chosen as a bold statement that would weather with the property over time.

The form of the extension was driven by maximising the area for the new family room. The off-centre, vaulted ceiling is the standout design feature, which has significantly added to the sense of space. Large patio doors connect the existing garden, creating an extension of the living space.
